Custody for schoolboy's attackers

Ashley Glastonbury had been drinking champagne before the attack
Three teenagers have been handed 12-month custodial sentences after beating up a French schoolboy and leaving him in agony in Bristol.

Ashley Glastonbury, 18, and two 17-year-olds, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty to assaulting Erwan Drouet, 16, on The Downs last summer.

Bristol Crown Court heard they picked on him after drinking champagne.

They ignored pleas not to hurt him because he was suffering from brittle bone disease.

Erwan was so badly injured he had to crawl for two hours to get 164m (150 yards) to his host family home.

Judge John Roach heard the three offenders were all students and were respectable young people of previous good character.

But he said: "What you did was mean and shameful.

"This was a dreadful example of your behaviour. Robbery in this city is rife. Your actions caused Mr Drouet serious injuries and will blight his life for some time."

Mrs Drouet has said her son is making good progress recovering in France.

Glastonbury has been sent to prison and the other two teenagers will serve their sentences at young offending institutions.

Four deny cyclist murder charge

Stephen Green was attacked in an underpass in Dunstable
A cyclist died after he was kicked, stamped on and battered with a stick by teenage robbers, a court has heard.

Stephen Green, 54, was attacked in an underpass beneath the M1 in Dunstable by a gang of four as he cycled home on 5 May, 2007, Luton Crown Court heard.
He died in hospital nine days later from a blood clot as a result of the injuries he suffered, it was said.
Darryll Bennett, 18, Richard McNamara, 19, Nicholas Garland, 18, and Shane Liddy, 19, all from Luton, deny murder.
Jurors heard how Mr Green was robbed of his rucksack as he cycled through an underpass running under the M1, after finishing a night shift.
Overheard talking
All but Mr Liddy went back to Mr McNamara's home after the attack where his mother overheard them talking, jurors heard.
Mr Trimmer said: "She heard Bennett say 'Did you see his face, did you see the way I was battering him.' McNamara replied: 'You were going mad man, I tried to get you off'."
All four defendants were arrested on 16 May. Mr Green's blood was found on trainers belonging to Mr McNamara and Mr Garland.
Mr Bennett, of Eighth Avenue, Mr McNamara of Butely Road, Mr Garland of Bradley Road, have pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of manslaughter and have also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to rob.
Mr Bennett admits a further charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Mr Liddy, of Brickley Road, denies manslaughter and a conspiracy to rob charge.
The case continues.

Pair admit leaving boy to drown
Shane Owoo's body was recovered last September
Two men who pushed a boy into a pond and watched him drown after he took a bike have admitted killing him.
The body of Shane Owoo, 16, was recovered from Lunt Pool in Bilston, West Midlands, on 30 September 2007.
Christopher Lewis, 22, and Marvin Walker, 21, both from Wolverhampton, pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Birmingham Crown Court.
Tobias Davies, 21, of Wolverhampton, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Davies had also been charged with manslaughter, but the Crown offered no evidence for manslaughter so he was formally cleared of the charge.
'Punishment swim'
The boy was made to enter the pool after a row over a bike, police said.
Shane had been assaulted in the street and then "escorted" to the pool by Walker and Lewis for a "punishment swim" on 29 September, the court heard.
Sticks and stones were used to stop the youngster, described by police as "not a strong swimmer", from getting out of the water.
Det Insp Simon Richards, from West Midlands Police, said: "Shane had taken a bike. One of the defendants owned that bike.
"Whether Shane was going to give that bike back or not I can't say because he wasn't given the opportunity.
"It was quite clear that he needed to get out of the pool but he wasn't allowed."
His family released a statement shortly after his death, describing him as a "typical teenager" who loved music and reading Harry Potter books.
All three defendants will be sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on 25 April.

Father's appeal over son's murder
David O'Leary was shot after arriving home with his girlfriend
The father of a man shot dead outside his Kent home has appealed for people to come forward with information.
David O'Leary, 31, was found with fatal injuries in Valley Road, Lydden, Margate, in the early hours of 1 March.
His father Dan branded his son's killer an assassin and has urged people with information to speak to him or police.
He said it was possible he would put up a reward with the help of friends but was hopeful that people in the community would come forward first.
Mr O'Leary, who runs a Margate business, said: "The man was in the house waiting, the lights had been cut off.
When the time is right I'll put the right amount of money up and hopefully that will catch the person

Dan O'Leary
"I'm hoping it's a local person because I think local people, once they know it's me, will get in contact with me or try to help because I'm well liked."
He added: "Many millionaire friends of mine have offered to put up substantial amounts of money as a reward, which I'm not going to do at the moment.
"But when the time is right I'll put the right amount of money up and hopefully that will catch the person."
Mr O'Leary said he was coping with his loss by keeping busy but was determined David's killer would be caught.
His son was shot dead after returning home from a night out with his partner, Emma Terry. The couple had three children.
In March officers appealed for anyone who may have seen the suspect running away from the scene at about 0245 GMT.

The suspect was about 5ft 6ins to 5ft 8ins tall with dark clothing and either very dark hair or a black bobble hat.
Detectives also said they were keen to trace a man believed to have been involved in an argument with Mr O'Leary in the nightclub DV8, in Marine Terrace, Margate, on 8 February:

Two men 'robbed and left to die'
Neil Williams and Andrew Owen were found lying in the road
Two men were violently attacked, robbed and left to die as they walked home from a night out, a court has heard.
The body of Andrew Owen, 42, was found in Sedgley, West Midlands, and Neil Williams, 41, of Telford, was found in nearby Stirchley in April last year.
Both men had been to their local pub and were left lying in the road.
Gabriel Bhengu and Jabu Mbowane, both 26 and of Court Road, Wolverhampton, and Kashia Allen, of Crosby Close, Wolverhampton, deny murder charges.
Wolverhampton Crown Court heard they are also charged with several separate robberies carried out in Shropshire and the West Midlands between February and April last year.

'Found by passers-by'
Their "campaign of robbery" involved violent attacks on vulnerable victims, mostly women and the elderly, which left them believing they were going to die. The trio deny all charges.
The court was told that Mr Williams, who was found on 6 April, died of heart failure.
"The treatment meted out to him by the persons that attacked him significantly contributed to his death. We say, quite simply, that is murder," prosecutor Roger Smith QC said.
Several days later, father-of-two Mr Owen, described as a "protective and gentle rough diamond", had been drinking in the Good Intent pub in Sedgley on the night he died.
He was found by passers-by hours later in Coronation Gardens. His gold jewellery and coat had been taken.
Both men were violently grabbed around the neck and then robbed of their belongings, the court was told.
Gabriel Bhengu and Jabu Mbowane face two murder charges and Kashia Allen is charged with the murder of Mr Owen.
The trial continues.

Sex attacker targets woman's home
Police issued an e-fit of the suspect
A woman was sexually assaulted in her own home in what detectives believe may have been a targeted attack.

The woman was pushed into her house in Horden, County Durham, after answering the door to a stranger on Saturday.

Police, who released an e-fit of the suspect, said the man subjected her to an hour-long sex attack before leaving the house in the Sunderland Road area.

He is white, 6ft tall, about 30 to 35, fat with a shaved head, and was wearing a polo-type shirt and jeans.

Det Insp Brad Howe, of Durham Police, said: "This was a very frightening ordeal for the victim and she is being offered specialist support to help her cope with what happened.

"Information suggests this was not a random attack and that the victim may have been targeted.

"These type of incidents are extremely rare and l believe this to be an isolated case."

Extra police patrols have been mounted in the area to reassure local residents.

Man killed by daughter's partner
Malcolm Neil was killed as his wife looked on, the court heard A grandfather was stabbed to death after becoming caught up in a row between his daughter and her boyfriend, the High Court in Glasgow has heard.
Christopher Callanan, 20, was jailed for eight years after admitting the culpable homicide of Malcolm Neil in Glasgow's Cranhill area in October.

The 42-year-old died from a single stab wound to his chest.
Nr Neil's family said Callanan's conviction would always be one of murder to them.
Mr Neil confronted his daughter's boyfriend about an argument the pair had earlier that day.
When he and his wife Georgette arrived at his home, Callanan lashed out with a knife he took from his kitchen.
Defence QC Peter Gray said Mr Neil had raised his arms and Callanan feared he was going to be attacked, but the victim's family spoke of their anger at what his killer had done.
He took away his own child's grandfather - and my dad
William Neil

"It was out of character for him to go to the house," Mr Neil's son William said.
"I don't believe for one second he went there to harm Christopher.
"He took away his own child's grandfather - and my dad."
Mr Neil's brother Billy, added: "Malcolm was just a family man who had never been in trouble in his life."
Sentencing Callanan, Judge Lord Bracadale said: "It is tragic the breakdown of your relationship with Samantha should have ended with the death of her father at your hand and her family have to bear that loss.
"I also accept that Mr and Mrs Neil came to your flat to confront you about what had happened between you and Samantha earlier that day."
The judge said it would have been better if they had not done so, but told Callanan: "It was you who took the knife from your flat and went downstairs."

The incident happened at about 0150 BST, at the junction of Barony Street and Barony Place.
The man was walking to his car when he was approached by two men, one of whom punched him in the face.
He was then threatened at knifepoint, and robbed of cash. Both thieves then made off down Barony Place.

Armed gangs target luxury stores Three raiders struck at Selfridges
Two luxury department stores in Manchester have been simultaneously targeted by armed robbers.
The gangs, who were armed with claw hammers, struck at Selfridges in Exchange Square and Harvey Nichols in New Cathedral Street at 1100 BST.
Three men went into Selfridges and smashed glass counters before stealing several watches worth about £400,000.
Two men wearing helmets attacked a security guard in Harvey Nichols, before taking watches worth £300,000.
The guard was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The five men left in a red Ford Transit van, which has since been recovered on Mirabel Street.
These men were after high-value pieces
Det Sgt Dave Turner
The van is believed to have been recently stolen from the Prestwich area but had since been fitted with false number plates.
The five men then made their getaway in an unknown vehicle.
Greater Manchester Police said the two incidents were linked and inquiries were continuing.
Det Sgt Dave Turner said: "This incident has left one man with minor injuries and a number of other people extremely distressed.
"These men seem to have had a clear plan of attack, they were after high-value pieces and knew which counters to target to find them."
One man is described as 5ft 10in (1.77m) and of a stocky build and was wearing a red fleece jacket and a peaked BMX-style helmet.
Another was slightly smaller wearing a light white high-visibility jacket.

Man in unprovoked racist assault
The man was approached by his attackers in Rose Street
A Polish man has been badly beaten in an unprovoked racist attack in the centre of Edinburgh.
The man was walking in Rose Street with a friend when he was confronted by three men at about 1900 BST on Tuesday.
They followed their victim into Castle Street where he was punched and kicked on the head and body.
The attackers were wearing labourers' clothes, including heavy work boots. It is thought they may have been drinking in the area before the assault.
The group was scared off by a taxi driver who beeped his horn, and they were last seen heading west along Rose Street.
This was a completely unprovoked and racially motivated assault, which left the victim badly bruised and extremely shaken
Lothian and Borders Police spokesman

All of the men were white. One was aged between 18 and 20 while the other two were in their mid 20s. One of the older attacker had a tattoo on his neck.
A police spokesman said: "This was a completely unprovoked and racially motivated assault, which left the victim badly bruised and extremely shaken.

"The area of the city where the assault took place is normally fairly busy at this time of the evening, and we know that there were several people who witnessed the incident.
"We want anyone who was in the area at the time, and saw what happened, to contact police immediately.

"Similarly, anyone who recognises the description of the three suspects, who may have been drinking in the area earlier in the evening, or working nearby, should also get in touch." [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]

Workers fend off machete attack
Gary Anderson and Robert Galt with the valve key
One of two Scottish Water employees who fended off a machete attack has told BBC Scotland of the "frightening" assault in Port Glasgow on Friday.
Gary Anderson said it was shocking to be attacked when they were out helping the public on an emergency call-out.

Scottish Water has said it would reconsider how it responded to out-of-hours water supply problems following the incident.

Scottish Water's Paul Maxwell, said it was a "despicable" attack.

Mr Anderson and colleague Robert Galt fended off the two machete-wielding men while working in the town's Southfield Avenue at 2120 BST.
As the attackers hacked into the van door and broke the window with an 18-inch blade, the pair fought them off with a large valve key.
Gary Anderson added: "As I was approaching my van, two youths came up and started using threatening and abusive language.
"When I was stepping into the van, one of them took a swipe at me with the blade and the glass came down on top of me - it was frightening.
"When you're out trying to help the public and this kind of thing happens, it's shocking."
'Territorial thing'
He said his colleague arrived at that point and used the valve to put some distance between the workers and the attackers.
"I don't understand why they did it - I think it was a kind of territorial thing - they were saying 'You're in the Port now'," he said.
"They were throwing half bricks at us as we tried to get into the van and they were attacking it with machetes - the whole incident lasted about 10 or 15 minutes."
Paul Maxwell, Scottish Water's regional manager for Inverclyde, said: "It is unacceptable that our staff should have encountered such an attack as they completed work to maintain water supplies to the town.
"We will now need to consider how best to respond to such out-of-hours interruptions to the water supply in future."
Mr Anderson called for work to be carried in well-known "blackspots" during conventional working hours to protect the safety of staff.
Strathclyde Police said inquiries were ongoing.

The police are appealing for witnesses to the mugging
A pregnant woman has been robbed at knifepoint while out walking with her two young children in Edinburgh.
The 28-year-old was walking with her three-year-old son and pushing her two-year-old daughter in a buggy through the underpass at Calder Road.
Two men and a woman approached her and demanded money at about 1300 BST on Saturday.
One of the men grabbed her son, while the woman pushed her against the wall and held a knife to her throat.
She removed rings from the victim's fingers, and took her purse from her bag.
This was a terrifying experience for a pregnant mother and her young children to have gone through
Police spokeswoman
The man then let the boy go, and all three suspects made off through the south end of the underpass.
The victim, who is four months pregnant, and her children were shaken but otherwise uninjured in the incident.
The female attacker is white, aged about 30-years-old with shoulder-length straight black hair.
She was about 5ft 5in tall, with a slim build, and was wearing a navy hooded cardigan over a white top, dark blue jeans, and white trainers.
'Left shaken'
The man who grabbed the child is also white and aged about 30, with short, dirty blond hair, a dark top, dark jeans and new trainers.
The other man, who was acting as a lookout, is aged about 25, white, about 5ft 9in tall and was wearing a dark cap and dark clothing.
A police spokeswoman said: "This was a terrifying experience for a pregnant mother and her young children to have gone through.
"Fortunately no one was injured in the incident, but the family have been left shaken as a result of the ordeal.
We would appeal for anyone who may have been in the area at the time, or who recognises the description of the suspects, to get in touch with police." [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]

Man critical after city shooting

The 60-year-old was blasted in the stomach when he opened his door
A man is in a critical condition after being shot at point-blank range by two men on the doorstep of his own home.
Emergency services, including armed response officers were called to the property at Lancaster Gardens, Whitleigh, Plymouth at 1825 BST.
Paramedics treated a 60-year-old businessman for a shotgun wound to his stomach and facial injuries, before taking him to Derriford Hospital.
Police said they could not rule out armed robbery as a motive.
The victim runs a car dealership in the Mutley area of Plymouth and neighbours said the home he shares with his wife, son and daughter, had been broken into on a number of occasions.
It is believed the man was pistol whipped before being shot.
They're a very nice family. I'm shocked this should happen here
Terry Luscombe, neighbour

A major manhunt has been launched by police. The force helicopter has been deployed and officers from the tactical aid group are carrying out door to door enquiries.
An appeal has been made for witnesses, but police have warned the public not to approach anyone suspicious.
Sgt Russ Phillips said it was being treated as a very serious incident.
"It's completely out of character for this area of the city and for the city in general," he said.
Neighbour Terry Luscombe said he was shocked to discover how badly injured the victim was.
"He's a very nice gentleman - a local car salesman who's very well known in Plymouth," he told BBC News.
"They're a very nice family. I'm shocked this should happen here."
