A-level student Nassirudeen Osawe was stabbed through the heart in Angel, north London, as he stood at a bus stop with friends on 27 December last year.

Jurors heard Ahmet Gomulu, from Stoke Newington, north London, said the group were staring at him before the killing.

Boy arrested over fatal stabbing

Conor was stabbed in the shoulder and died on the way to hospital
A 16-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of the fatal stabbing of a joinery student who was attacked after attending a party in Manchester.

Conor Black, 16, was stabbed once in the shoulder in Moston Lane, Harpurhey, in the early hours of Saturday.

Conor, who lived in Harpurhey, was found on grass a few feet from the main road. He died on the way to hospital.

Forensic tests are being carried out on two knives found nearby to see if they were used in the killing.

Detectives, who are also looking at CCTV footage, have said they have not yet established a motive for the attack.

Patrols have been stepped up in the area to help reassure residents, and police are appealing for anyone with information about the stabbing to get in touch.

They are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who saw a hooded figure, witnessed running from the scene following the attack, which happened at about 0200 BST.

Teenager shot dead in supermarket
Ryan Bravo is the 22nd teenager killed violently in London this year
A teenager shot dead in a supermarket was an innocent bystander caught in the line of fire, police have said.
Ryan Bravo, 18, from Brixton, south London, was killed in the Costcutter store in Walworth, south-east London, on Wednesday night.
A post-mortem examination revealed the teenager died from a single gun shot wound to the back.
A 19-year-old man has been arrested over the shooting and is being held at a south London police station.
Ryan was with family members when he was shot as two men barged past him while trying to get away from someone.
In a statement, Ryan's family said: "I would like to state that Ryan was a decent, hardworking young man and loving son.
"This is an extremely difficult time for all of us that knew and loved Ryan and I would ask that we are given the time and space to grieve in private."
Investigating officer Det Insp Tim Carter has appealed for witnesses.
Det Supt Gary Richardson, from Operation Trident, which tackles gun crime in London's black community, said: "We are keeping an open mind regarding the motive of this murder.
"However, it appears at this stage that the victim has no links to gang activity and that he was an innocent bystander - caught up in the line of fire and was not the intended target."
Officers said Ryan was walking home with his brother and cousin when they stopped in the shop.
"Two other black males barged past them into the shop and the victim was shot in the back," Det Insp Tim Carter said.
"The shots were fired by two men on scooters, who then drove off."
About five men were seen leaving the scene on mopeds.
Police said they have not traced the two men who were the intended target of the attack.
A number of people were seen leaving the area on mopeds
A man in his 20s said he was in the shop when the incident took place.
He said: "I was buying cigarettes when four or five guys ran in.
"I didn't think anything bad was going to happen because I thought they were joking and laughing.
"But then I heard shots, three or four. I've never seen anyone get shot before - it was like something out of a film.
"I just put all of my stuff down and ran out of the shop. A hysterical lady ran out after me. I'm lucky to be alive."
Forensic experts have examined what appear to be two bullet holes in the glass lower panels of a public telephone box.
The phone box, which is in front of a neighbouring carpet store, has been cordoned off by police.
Police revealed that an earlier shooting, which may be connected, took place on Brixton's Myatts Field North Estate at about 1630 BST.
Ryan is the 22nd teenager to die in a shooting or stabbing incident this year.

Is it any wonder people are fleeing London?
By Jan Moir
Last Updated: 12:01am GMT 16/01/2008
In a north London suburb last week, a schoolgirl was beaten, gang-raped and then had drain-cleaning fluid poured on her body apparently to destroy DNA evidence. In the eternal cesspit of senseless urban crime, I feel that a dreadful nadir of sorts has been reached, a benchmark of slaked lust and casual, sadistic cruelty.
Police sources say the 16-year-old will never fully recover from the injuries caused by the caustic soda and, at the time of writing, she remains under heavy sedation in a burns unit, fighting for her life.
One could weep an ocean for this young woman, her life ruined by these savages, who hunted in a pack like animals and dragged her to an empty house, caring nothing for her wellbeing or future.
premeditation is shocking, and underlines the fact that some of the rootless delinquents who roam the London streets are now scraping the bottom of the barrel of humanity.
I'm almost embarrassed to say that the attackers have been described as "five black youths", in case you think I'm being racist in highlighting this crime.
Yes, these are the peculiar times we live in, particularly in a week when Trevor Phillips, the chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, has pointed out that "white flight is accelerating" as Britain becomes increasingly polarised along ethnic lines.
Following the controversy started by the Bishop of Rochester, who said that some Muslim enclaves were "no-go areas" for Christians, it all seems to suggest a country that is becoming increasingly fragmented; a patchwork of rigidly delineated little pockets of race and religion, knots of unyielding humanity who just can't rub along with each other.
This is not a Britain many of us would care to recognise, or even want to live in, although it is true that certain sectors of the middle class are fleeing from inner London like pashmina-wrapped lemmings, desperate to escape the creeping spread of urban decay.
Last year, nearly a quarter of a million decent, law-abiding citizens packed their bags and left the capital for good, seeking what they hope will be a better life elsewhere. They moved to outer boroughs, other city suburbs, rural areas, abroad, the back end of beyond, anywhere but here.
While their fairytale, roses-around-the-door belief in the safety of the countryside and the romantic ideal of a thatched cottage for two is touching, it does point to an underlying urban unease.
I would rather take my chances in the city than the country, but one can hardly blame them for wanting to move.
Elsewhere in London this week, a medical student was stabbed to death in a row over an orange in a Brixton fruit shop.
A pupil who was expelled for allegedly having a knife took his school to the High Court. And about the time most of us were sitting down to dinner, watching The Bill on television or putting the children to bed, a teenage girl underwent an unimaginable ordeal in an ordinary suburban street.

What is going to happen to those of us left to live here if youths across the city continue to feel quite comfortable and confident in running amok? That's before you even factor in the older, more professional criminal gangs from more than 25 countries, who operate prosperous drug trafficking, people smuggling, prostitution, money laundering and fraud rackets on the capital's streets.

London is a welcoming city, where home-grown and particularly international criminal networks are flourishing nicely. Somewhere in the city, a great termite nest of law-breaking and corruption grows by the day, nourished by immigrants, some of them illegal, from Algeria, Nigeria, Jamaica and Pakistan, among others.
Is it racist to point that out, too? I don't know any more. All I know is that London has room to absorb them all, particularly as so many of its citizens have recently left in a hurry. And while cosy family evenings by the fire remain one of the few benefits of a wet British winter, how alarming that fewer and fewer people feel safe doing this inside their own homes.
Comments
First of all, Bravo Robert W. He's on to something but I suggest something even better or at least along with his suggestion.

VIGILANTE Justice! It would work.
The problem now is, there are no penalties. It worked well and did it job and disbanded in San Francisco in 1849. It can work here. The real problem is, nobody has the guts. And the bad guys know it. They aren't impressed by your "civilized" treatment of scum.

I've been living in Shenzhen, China for 10 years, and sure there's crime here but at 3 or 4 am you can regularly see woung women in mini-skirts & boob tubes walking home alone after a night on the town. How long would they last in London? I left 20 years ago, and never looked back.

What can I say? If I moan i am a RACIST!! We have to suffer to divide of wealth in this country. Now we suffer the divide of culture. These people want our country. However, most of them flee criminal prosicution in other countries, and wish to abuse our welfare system. Our so called leaders are traitors and should be hung as such. Instead of getting these people out of power, we dont bother voting instead. we should make a stand now! before we perish in the hands of labour and the tories

The worst side of the torygraph. Why are the immigrant criminals all african or eastern, when the worst of what you suggest is actually European crime from those violent nasty caucasian people. Why are the white british politicians and useless civil service so bad at managing immigration and policing ?

Have you heard of journalism ?
Crimes may be far worse in nature these days, as they would be with progress, but what about quantity and concentration, effects of education, and denial of opportunity ?
I really cant be bothered to explain to you what a good article should contain, youre only interested in pandering to awful grey haired conservatives that still blight us today.
Why is policy and policing so ineffectively run by those true blue white individuals.
Why not discuss the greed and selfishness pushed so hard by the evil government of the eighties now hitting us with a vengenance?
No such thing as community said thatcher. Certainly wasnt when she had finished. And never will it return, now the mantra of money at all costs is set in stone.
Wake up and try to be something of a journalist.

I've lived in the same flat in suburban Chingford for nearly 5 years. It's not a bad area, even now, but I can see a number of changes even in that short period that point to a slow decline into a scruffy inner city district like the neighbouring Walthamstow. My local railway station was once clean and pristine. Now it is coated with graffiti. Non-travelling teenagers hang around the platforms menacingly. Skunk is openly smoked on trains late at night. The station's subway is also covered regularly by graffiti in between regular repainting. My car parked on the street has been damaged. Two of my neighbours have been burgled. Speeding cars in the area are common. Naturally the local police are invisible, and, in my experience, ineffective. The Lib-Lab council does nothing for the area. Litter is a problem and, again, graffiti is never far away. OK, no one is using caustic acid here yet but I would happily move out of the area when I can because no political party seems to have any idea how to stop an area like mine from continuing its slide downhill.

London is run by the Liberal Middle Classes whose mouthpiece is the BBC. You have a high minded plan for the world and ridicule any voice that opposes you. You deserve all that happens to you.
Posted by P Moor on January 16, 2008 7:23 PM

Sorry but there is a lot of exageration here about how shocking the change is: I am a male in my late 40's, brought up in Glasgow in the 60's and 70's on stories of gang and knife fights, and aware of murders and fighting all around on a sectarian basis, if you wore the wrong kind of shirt in a given part of town you were knifed.
At the time Ulster was going through it's worst excesses with both communities "Tarring and Feathering" members of the community.
After University I moved to London for 20 years and lived through riots in Brixton and Blackwater farm, regular Irish bombings and an peak of a drug fuelled crack violence at least 10 years ago.
I moved out of London for work and still regularrly have to visit, some parts of it are dangerous as are some parts of New York or Paris or Rome. London has never been and will never be like Oxfordshire, but the idea that there was no crime 10, 20 or 30 years ago is a myth!
There have been generations of people moving to London to establish a career and then moving out as they become established there is nothing new here.
The individual case quoted is horrifying and those responsible should be caught and the key thrown away, I do not care if they are black, brown or white and whether they are born here elswhere in the EU or elsewhere. If we never release them then the debate over can we then deport them does not apply, for a crime so horrendous they should never see the outside of a cell again.
We then do need to deal with our judges and legal system, if other EU states operating to the same rules can simply deport illegal immigrants and somehow we can not it is not the EU but our judges that are the problem and that must be within our power to fix.

At last someone who is actually reporting a crime as it should be with the facts...Well done on actually portraying what actually happened and what is happening to our city. I fear for London and this country because of the issues you raised in your article in regard to immigration and the isolation of certain religious groups. I commend your style of reporting and wish more people would report the facts and not be scared of the "politically correct idiots" that seem to prevail these days...

I returned to the UK last year for the first time in 5 years and was shocked at how the country has declined, London especially. Having lived in New York for nearly 5 years I am dreading my return to the UK when my visa expires.
New York had a serious problem and they fought back by hiring more police and putting them on the streets where they could be seen and getting the low lifes off the street. Now statistically it is the safest city in the USA as pointed out by Maddie, but don't be fooled, the figures are "per capita" so there is still plenty of crime in a city of 12 million.
In the UK, will someone have the b*lls to stand up and put the "Great" back into Britain? Tell the EU enough is enough. Stop ALL immigration. Any immigrant found guilty of a crime to be deported AFTER serving their sentence. Make crime PAY. Hard labour should be brought back, so should public flogging and the death penalty. Life imprisonment should mean life. There must be an island off the Scottish coast that could be converted into a prison camp, no guards required, just drop food supplies by helicopter, if the prisoners riot and kill each other good riddance.

Although immigrants represent 'only' a small percentage of the population (at the moment) they are concentrated in the cities like London where policy is decided and influenced.
Decisions are therefore rarely based on a more typical rural or suburban mix resulting in law and practice which is unrepresentitive of the population as a whole - you only have to look at the media to see this.

The narrower a man's mind, the broader his statements.
I live in London, I feel safe, I'm happy, and I'm making tons of money compared with those in the slums of Rio, crime is everywhere, empathise with the victims, but recognise that it's got bugger all to do with race.
Yes that's right, it's not a poorly researched, knee-jerk sensationalist tabloid column - it's 'realism'... Racial prejudice is a thing of the past? You only have to scrape the surface...

more worthy of the Sun I think

One problem with the "white flight" that they are leaving to avoid problems in the city, not because they like country areas. This then puts pressure on country folk with increased housing costs, traffic and sometimes, a different way or speed of life being imposed.

The solution to this dreadful situation is enact draconian powers to deal with the anarchy brought about by decades of left wing social policy. The judiciary, academics and senior bureaucrats are as much to blame as the politicians themselves. It seems fitting that when revolutions occur these are often the groups that are strung up.

You are being racist when you choose to only highlight crimes by certain ethnic minorities and not provide any balance to your so called article. Ever heard of including statistical analysis or source based research to show the different types of crime taking place in London and how much of it is porportionately committed by all social and ethnic groups? No, you clearly managed to get out of writing simple essays at school. I suppose therefore that white people, or British born Indians, or people in their 30s, don't commit heinous crimes such as rape, or fraud, it must be mainly blacks or pakistanis - how worldly wise you are.

The rape and acid attack is so, so utterly horrific. It MUST NOT be allowed to just pass with a shrug as 'one of those things'. A very clear message must be sent to perpetrators and those like them who seem to think that they are living on some sort of free-for-all warzone with no boundaries. Its about time the Government of this country took a stand. The slide into lawlessness and anarchy needs to be stopped and stopped now.

Solution:
Deport Criminal Immigrants
Murder - Death by hanging
Rape - Castration
Child Abuse - Castration
Assault / GBH - Public Lashing + Salt
Theft - Finger removed for each incident

I may sound like some right wing nazi but I'm not. I'm just a 30-something average joe who wants a quiet, crime-free life. Until there is a proper deterrent to crime it will persist.

So to state that Blacks are inherent criminals rather than at the bottoom of the social heap therfore more likely to want to commit crime is Racist.

This is a SOLUTION. Recidivism rates will be too small to tabulate. Any chance? Not with the likes of MacCavity Brown and Livingslime in charge of the London. Goodbye, city of my birth, I will remember you with affection, but will not visit your grave.

The difference between the the UK and America is that America discourages mulitculturalism and the UK politicians (few of whom have lived in a mixed society) think it is 'liberal' and 'cool' and 'clever' and 'PC' to talk about it over a pink gin. The last time I was in London I certainly felt a deep simmering distrust between different ethnic groups. That can so easily lead to civil strife. I live in East Africa and what I saw in the UK is definitely going in the wrong direction. The UK is too small to have its Jeddahs and Haitis. It is a time bomb masked by platitudes and forced smiles and arrogant politicians with no concept of history.

I may wish later that I had not written this but my reaction to the depravity perpetrated on that poor girl, is to think it is time for a debate on what being human is all about. It is surely more than having arms, legs, an internal skeleton and walking upright. It must also be about behaviour. When 'people' do not know right from wrong, when they use others merely as an outlet for depraved appetites, when they have no conscience - are they truly human?
I might argue they are not fully human and thus all the sanctimonious legislation which protects these creatures should not apply to them. They could then be dealt with like 'mad' dogs, rogue elephants ie animals who behave dangerously and outside the accepted norms for their species and be humanely dispatched.

Sorry for mentioning it again, but reading the news in Britain, I see Enoch Powell's words coming to fruition.

The Britain I remember is no longer there - I land in London and met greeting me obviously an immigrant with a heavy accent welcoming me to Great Britain, I go through immigration and customs - another group of people who don't appear to be from the indeginous population. I stopped having my car from a particular car rental company because I was the ethnic and how they spoke to me was disgusting. I stop getting petrol near the airport because I feel threatened and feel out of place. I stop going into the local city centre to shop after 10am because I feel threatened by the yobs, the gangs of men etc. In fact. I will soon stop visiting Britain.

What the author of this piece has done is present us with a reason why people may "flee" from London. Many of the comments on this page have not considered other reasons such as the price of houses in london, perhaps people have made their money and have decided to get out of the rat race.
One comment suggested that most big cities were the same in terms of crime and this I believe to be true of the big cities in Britain.
This is something that has not changed in 25 years this is nothing new! What we really need is to use the exhorbitant amount of tax to fund the police and give them the powers necessary to prevent crime, the key word being prevent.
Finally the 5 youths who committed the atrocious act may have been born in this country so where do we send them back to? The comments have made the assumption that these criminals are from another country. I think it more likely that they are born and bred Britons. Finally most people coming to this country are looking for honest work and are not some sort of viking horde here to rape and pillage the British nation.

Chris Palmer, 2:27am, may have the perfect answer but this is what will really happen.
IF they are caught they will go through a protracted series of analyses to determine if they should stand trial or whether their human rights will be violated. Assuming they are taken to trial some sleazy lawyer will argue that unless the girl will identify each one individually they will escape prosecution because it could not be proved which one(s) raped her. Then because all right thinking people (including the black community) will want to kill them they will be given new identities, money, houses and a new life at your expense. I say your because I left ages ago and am safe in the Middle East and rural France. Good luck

I left the UK seven years ago to go and live and work in the USA. I am amazed at how the level of violence has continued to increase over this time in the UK. When I compare the two countries the USA is a much safer place to live. The American people have a level of respect towards each other that no longer exists in the UK. I feeling more ashamed every day to say that I'm British given how the country has gone down hill. I think that the government and the liberal "Do-Gooders" are to blame for the falling standards. I agree that there is an issue and that we all need to face up to. Our inner cities are going the way that many in the US have done. It is not too late to take them back. My overriding question is - where are the parents in all of this? They have a responsibility as citizens and we must ensure they shoulder it. they need to stop believing "my son/daughter wouldn't do anything like that". They should know and understand where they are. And what do the Police receive in all this? - criticism for not acting and when they do act legal action and complaints from parents. We need to stop being scared and act or we'll descend into the Armageddon we all anticipate.

There is no discipline, there is too much finding excuses for people stepping out of line, blaming society, anyone but the person themselves. This PC concept has gone completely overboard, bending over backwards not to offend foreigners, etc while they should be the ones that bend to fit in with the culture of the country they moved to. That is the way it is in most other countries & continents.

Slough has a shifting population... whatever immigrant group is the "in crowd". At one time it was Hindus, Sikhs, and Moslems, and Afro-Caribbeans, who I got on with very well. It was very colourful, relaxed and cheerful. Nowadays it is a mixture of Europeans, co-existing uneasily.

Sir Trevor Phillips has kindly allowed us to criticise ethnic communities, so that's OK. But like all leaders in modern Britain, he's positioned right behind the directionless drift of state-subsidised minority social groups into tribal conflict.

The silent British tradition of "watch this space" will of course persist, just as there are "more fish in the sea"; although a few observers have noticed the latter is somewhat suspect and are sensibly refocusing on "exit this space"

I've been an expatriate for more than 25 years. On those occasions I did return during that period, it was dramatically apparent to me, particularily in London, that the presence of multicultural residents may have quadrupled during my absence. In most other countries we would never be given the same rights there as those nationals enjoy in our country. Nor would the behaviour in those lawless immigrants in UK be tolerated by the governments of those other countries. UK has probably liberalised its democracy so much in the past that it is now in danger of being taken over by by all that is undesirable in a civilised stste. UK democracy obviously doesn't work as expected, irrespective of party politics and today we are reaping the rewards for bad judgements in the past. Beware! Recall the events in Fiji where the number of immigrants increased so much that indigenous Fijians were outvoted in their own 'democratic elections' yet those immigrant's home country had passed laws to prevent immigrants standing for election there.

I moved out of London at the back end of 2006 although many of my contemporaries remain there. I echo the sentiments of many contributors here. Sadly, the iron grip of the Human Rights Act works in concert with a policy of unrestricted immigration to prevent the necessary action. With immigration networks being run by increasingly sophisticated and ruthless criminal gangs, the cost of resolving these problems is likely to be astronomical.

As with most of my posts, this tends towards pessimism. However, given the inexorable downward trend in terms of quality of life, one wonders how long the 'chattering classes' (as they are often called) can live in a state of denial. Also very poignant to point out that he problems are not confined to London. 3 million people have come in from Poland alone (2 million net) With Turkey (population 70 million) and Ukraine (population 40 million plus) due for access to the EC and thus the UK, expect it to get far,far worse across a far laarger swathe of the country

But it's no use trying to get them to admit that they got it wrong as they’re far too arrogant and self righteous for that and cannot take criticism. They live in an abstract and peculiarly mad dream world of impracticable and unworkable ideals and cannot separate right from wrong. They’ll see a quote from Marx and think they’ve found the Holy Grail. They’re an impediment to creating a true healthy society and will call those that don’t agree with them ‘fascists’ when it’s they themselves who are the real fascists. Back in the 1970s the FBI produced statistics that showed 65% of all reported crime in the USA was related to minority racial groups. Thats a fact. However we all know that in America if you dont make money that you are considered slightly subnormal because its the American dream to be rich. In Britain we have reached the same point. As a pauper my family want nothing to do with me since they are exceedingly rich. They think I will ask for some handouts so there is no contact. In all probability being a member of a minority group adds some social pressures to any feeling of alienation. Money is a big divider but there are other cultural barriers like religion. Crime is when all moral values and personal responsibilty are tossed into the gutter. That happens if you are no longer welcome in your own society. Being poor is also a bit of a downer!

That's right, Jan Moir, get out of London - it certainly won't miss you, judging from this article.

I can't express how annoyed I get that the Telegraph - theoretically a patriotic newspaper - hates Britain and its people with such a vengeance, as to do so many of its readers.

Jan, no one is saying modern London is perfect, but your 500 words or so of semi-coherent, unconnected, mealy mouthed, solution-free pap expresses absolutely nothing. Honestly, it sounds like you'd never visited London in your life and learned all you knew about it from the pages of the Daily Mail.

I'm genuinely surprised such a well renowned paper would even print this.

This is simply the latest in a decades-long succession of poorly thought out hell-in-a-handcart nonsense written about London. At the time of writing, the city has not yet collapsed into anarchy, split irreconcilably along racial lines, been struck down from heaven etc etc.

I am in no way discounting the unimaginably horrible ordeal of the girl mentioned, or those of any of the other victims of terrible crimes. But when will you - any journalist - realise that a small number of crimes, sensational and appalling as they may be, do not sum up a city?

You mention: "I'm almost embarrassed to say that the attackers have been described as "five black youths". Why? Many black community leaders have been saying for years that there is a problem of crime and antisocial behaviour among young men from the Afro-Caribbean population. Hadn't you noticed? Or do you think you're being 'brave', perhaps even 'non PC'?

Unlike, I imagine, most of your readers, I live in a part of London you would probably say is 'divided' along racial lines - between Camberwell and Peckham, close to several of last year's shooting incidents involving teenagers.

Sure, it has its problems, notably street crime, but we all rub along perfectly well.

And the "decent, law-abiding citizens" as you put it are not only leaving London, many of them are arriving where I live - families from African countries like Ghana and Nigeria. You couldn't find a more God fearing, hard working lot. It might be a surprise to you but it's not only the white middle classes who can be decent and law abiding.

One final point: I'd counter that unaffordable housing is responsible for far more people leaving London than crime.

Savages yes but please don't elevate those vermin to "hunting like pack of animals", at least they eat their prey.

New York saw the writing on the wall, had the courage to bring in true zero tolerance, and the tide turned against these vermin. Wonder if London-UK ever will.

I threw in the gauntlet, "Escaped from London" and "expated" to Abu Dhabi. There is a wonderfully simple zero tolerance here (one strike, any strike, and you are out - of the country!) that maintains its (must be true) 'safest city in the world' slogan.

JAN, just say it as it is!

I wouldn't rent a house to a foreign criminal, an illegal immigrant or an un-vetted foreign stranger.
I would be regarded as incompetent & neglegent & would probably have my insurances recinded due to my irresponsibility.

BUT, UNLIMITED-UNREGULATED-UNVETTED immigrants are being admitted to the UK by this EU/LABOUR regime on our behalf, in defiance of OUR wishes, to exist among us at great risk to our safety & quality of life.

Reality is this: TV News reports are filled with the most vicious & outrageously NON British type crimes every day.
It seems to me that about 90% of these crimes appear to be committed by NON indigenous UK residents, WE DIDN'T ASK FOR THIS!
In fact, we've constantly argued against this madness.

Things have to change. The short term must see an erradication of this shameful & corrupt EU/Labour regime.
Secondly, we must hold to account & pressure the incoming Conservative adminustration to do, AS WE ASK!

If not, & we get the usual old 'Claptrap' about them being there to do as they think & not what we want, then we must create a movement for political change.

If the Conservatives fail to reverse Labour's damage & restore democracy & control, then we MUST instigate resistance & restore it ourselves.

I don't remember reading about this appalling attack in The Telegraph- it may have been in the paper?Apparently, there is now so much in the way of violence and other atrocious activity that if it was all published there would be no room in a typical newspaper to accommodate it all, and people do not wish to be assailed by a tidal wave of awfulness, so we just get the news editor's recorded "lowlights" regarding the terminal decline of law and order across the nation. Of course, London is the place where according to the Metropolitan Police commissioner, crime has fallen so much, you can leave the house unlocked. It appears that if you are female, then it's probably not safe to walk the streets- a minor matter of concern for this preening policeman known for his serial errors of judgement.

It was ever thus, unfortunately, as it is in most big cities. But I never tire of London and must have been hundreds of times - I'd take it any day rather than some dull place in the sun.

the step towards a Solution to the violent crime everywhere, is of course to get rid of the New Labour party, including of course Ian Blair. Second put police back on the streets in force with nightsticks and the tazers they like so much. I know this will lead to a huge drop in revenues from beleaguered motorists, but it would be worth it. Does the EU directed mass immigration work?.. no. Just look around with the PC goggles off. I am truly shocked at what that young girl has endured. What has been done to that child is perhaps something we will see more of because of the infatuation with DNA. It could be argued that DNA databases are creating even more callous criminality as well as grievious and unnecessatry damage to victims. My view is an okd fashioned one...revive conscription: a stint in a combat zone will do wonders for these headcases. Revive corporal punishment in schools: how much longer before these governmental nincompoops realise how important this is; at least to boys. Then of course proper crime and punishment procedures: won't happen under new labour of course(or any government that rules through fear because of moral bankruptcy), but this is urgent. Most important; get out of the EU, it is killing britain already, only the blind can't see it.

Moir may choose to live in London but I'll bet that it's in one of those middle class ghettos like Clapham where the only foreigners she'll encounter are the odd Polish cleaner who sure as hell won't live there. This is so typically middle class. Just dump the horror story of immigration on the ordinary people of England and then use words like racism. A recession may well bring a very ugly backlash.

This is ridiculous.

What a nonsense, ranting article.
The most annoying non-point; if 500k people left London last year I would have thought you need to confirm that this is a marked increase on previous years to use it as a supporting point.

The fact that you didnt suggests it isn't. Indeed, I thought it was actually a small figure and one that reflects migrating new families. Equally, I suspect the amount of people coming in to London is bigger than 500k, a logical turnover that has always existed, but that's probably discountable because theyre predominantly Eastern European and / or slightly browner than 'us'.

Oh, and bring back hanging.

Moron, this is sub Daily Mail.

Is it racist to tell the truth?

Yes!

We've brought this on ourselves by allowing our government to shoehorn a cornucopia of cultures into one which will ultimately shrivel and die. They've allowed the overpopulation of the country with the dregs of Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe with no thought to the opinions of the indigenous population and then hold their hands up in amazement when crime soars. We merely have to accept it or be arrested for being racist because, as we all know, we can't point out the truth if it's an inconvenient

Gun 'Killa', 18, jailed for life

Callum fired three shots from a converted sub-machine gun
A teenager who called himself "Killa" has been jailed for life for murdering a student in south London with a converted Mac 10 sub-machine gun.

Robel Tewelde, 21, was found dead in a stairwell at flats at Jephson Court, in Studley Road, Stockwell, on 2 October.

An Old Bailey jury heard how Jermaine Callum, 18, of Clapham, had carried out a motiveless "cold-blooded execution".

Judge Paul Worsley told Callum, who was 17 at the time of the killing, that he must serve at least 19 years in prison.

The judge described the attack as "cowardly and deadly".

Mr Tewelde, who wanted to be a doctor, died when two bullets hit him, one of which pierced his liver, lungs and heart.

He was not looking for trouble and he was not mixed up with any crime

Ilfa Ghere
Victim's mother

The victim and his friends were running up a staircase at the flats to get away from Callum when three shots were fired.

Mr Tewelde's mother, Ilfa Ghere, said: "My son was just starting out on what would have been a good career and becoming someone who was a useful member of society.

"He was not looking for trouble and he was not mixed up with any crime.

"His death is a huge loss to everyone."

Robel Tewelde wanted to become a doctor

Following the teenager's arrest, police found his number stored in his mobile phone under the name "Killa".

They also found a draft text message which mentioned "Macs", body bags and "riding to a mission".
Callum was convicted of murder by an Old Bailey jury earlier this year, although prosecutors were unable to suggest a motive for the crime.
Ngosi Edwards, 18, of Hemans Street, Lambeth, has also been charged with Mr Tewelde's murder and is awaiting trial, police said.

Petrified 14-year-old 'ran pleading for help before gang killed him'

Girl, 14, stabbed to death

A terrified 14-year-old killed in a London knife attack begged a bystander for help as he f led from a mob of teenagers, the Old Bailey heard today.

Witness Tom Morgan told the court how stab victim Martin Dinnegan ran past him pleading: "Please help me."

MrMorgan said he saw the petrified boy hold his hands out in an attempt to placate one of his pursuers but Martin was felled by a punch to the head.

His attacker then pinned him to the ground and made repeated stabbing motions towards his back, the court heard.

Mr Morgan and his girlfriend rang 999 and, in a tape recording played to the jury, told the operator: "There is a white guy and a massive group of black guys who are kicking the crap out of him."

Two men and two youths have pleaded not guilty to the murder of Martin in Holloway in June last year.

Aftab Jafferjee QC, prosecuting, has told the jury how Martin was beaten to the ground and stabbed in Tollington Way "in a case that moved from dirty looks to death within an hour".

Mr Morgan gave evidence today from behind screens to shield his face from the dock and the public gallery.

He told how he and his girlfriend had been on their way to get a DVD from a rental store when the boy he later recognised as Martin, wearing a grey tracksuit and hood, ran towards them.

"He was very white faced, he was sprinting towards us and shouted: 'Help me, please help me,'" Mr Morgan said.

"He ran past us on the road to my left then a guy with a black tracksuit went past on a large-framed BMX. He was cycling after the victim and was the distance of one parked car away from us.

"He was very dark skinned although I was unable to see his face as he was wearing a black hooded jumper with the hood pulled up.

"He dropped the bike when he got alongside-the victim. Martin stood still and put his hands up as if to placate the cyclist. Martin appeared scared, very scared.

"The effect on the cyclist was almost nothing whatsoever and the next thing was that a large haymaker came from his right fist. It was a right hook and the blow connected with Martin's head or neck."

At this point Mr Morgan's attention was distracted by another youth sprinting up and shouting, the court heard.

"I looked back up the road and Martin was on the floor now," Mr Morgan said. "It looked as if the first assailant was leaning on top of Martin who was on his back and side facing away from us.

"The first assailant was leaning with all his weight on Martin's shoulder and upper arm pressing him to the floor so that Martin seemed to be pinned to the floor. Then I saw what seemed to be a stabbing motion rather than a punching motion four or five times in very rapid succession."

Mr Morgan explained that he had not seen a knife but, as he was experienced in martial arts and disarming those armed with knives, he could identify the difference between a punching and stabbing action, which he demonstrated to the jury.

He then told how a crowd of up to 20 people aged "between 10 and 20" started "laying into" Martin.

Mr Morgan rang 999 at 8.38pm, telling the operator that it looked as though one of the attackers had a knife.

Martin, a pupil at St Aloysius College in Archway, died at the scene.

Rene John-Baptiste, 21, of Plaistow, Sean Clark, 19, of Holloway, and a 16-yearold from Finsbury Park and a 17-year-old from Holloway, who cannot be named because of their ages, have all pleaded not guilty to murder.

Teenager dies in stabbing attack
The stabbing is the latest in a spate of violent teenage deaths
A teenager has died after being stabbed in south London.
The 18-year-old was found with a stab wound to the abdomen by police called to reports of an assault in Guildford Road, Stockwell, on Thursday.
Police believe the victim was attacked by up to eight males who were described as wearing hooded tops and had bikes. The victim died in hospital later.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested earlier in connection with the stabbing and is being questioned by detectives.
Police said he was arrested at his home in Brixton, south London.
A crime scene cordon was set up following the attack, which took place at about 1915 BST.
One of our neighbours came and knocked on our door and told our son there was a body lying on the street
Early on Friday officers were carrying out a forensic examination of a green Peugeot parked in Guildford Road.
Keith Bayley, who lives opposite where the victim was found, said he had seen the teenager lying in a pool of blood.
He said: "One of our neighbours came and knocked on our door and told our son there was a body lying on the street.
"There were a lot of paramedics trying to revive him. He was there for about 20 minutes, then they took him away in an ambulance.
"Until then he was just lying there on the road, fighting for his life."
Mr Bayley said the stabbing had changed how he and his family felt about the area.
"It changes everything round here. My 14-year-old son has asked to be picked up from school tonight. It just changes everything," he said.
A teenage friend of the victim, who gave her name as Natasha, said she had known him for five years and described him as "tall, slim and good looking".
"He always stayed out of trouble, he was a sweet kid and actually quite quiet.
"It has been horrifying hearing the news this morning. As soon as I heard I knew it was going to be someone I knew."
Edward Skurfield, 19, who lives in Guildford Road said: "I have lived here for three years and my friend has lived here for 11 years and we have not heard of any knife crime in that time in this area.
"It is so upsetting because people keep dying."
The 18-year-old is the 21st teenager to suffer a violent death in London this year.
Roman Catholics will be gathering for an all-day vigil at Westminster Cathedral on Friday where they will pray for an end to knife and gun crime in the city.
Organiser Nick Black said it was a way of bringing people together.
"There are a lot of people out there like me who don't really know what to do about this and there is a level of fear and intimidation on the streets with people nervous about approaching anybody

Mother devastated by son's death
The mother of a teenager stabbed to death after a row over a water fight has spoken of the "senseless and meaningless loss."
Frederick Moody Boateng, 18, was killed near his home in Lambeth, south London, on 17 July.
His mother Mary Moody, spoke as about 300 people gathered for a vigil at the scene of the murder on Guildford Road.
A man was arrested on Tuesday in connection with his death and continues to be questioned by police.
A 16-year-old who was arrested on the night of the incident has been released on bail until mid-August.
A line of water guns were left on Guildford Road along with more than 50 bunches of flowers and notes from friends.
Ms Moody said he was a much-loved son who "filled our lives with cheerfulness, laughter and joy".
"We are extremely devastated by this tragic, senseless and meaningless loss at the tender age of 18," she added.
"We draw strength from the love and care he lavished on us. We take courage from the memories of a good man who stood out for his good character."
We as a society have to rally against knife and gun crime
Church ministers from across south London attended the vigil and several of them called for an end to knife crime.
One said: "We as a society have to rally against knife and gun crime. Our young people must stop taking the law into their own hands."
The family led the mourners on an "anti-knife crime march" in memory of Mr Moody Boateng.
Many of them donned orange T-shirts for the third-of-a-mile (480 metres) walk, to Stockwell Tube station and back, as it was the teenager's favourite colour.
Two of his college friends held up a large banner, with the words: "In memory of Freddie! Please stop the knife crime."
Mr Moody Boateng, a former business student at Kingston College, became the 21st teenager to die in violent circumstances in London this year.

Knife prosecution age limit cut

Anyone aged 16 or over in England and Wales who carries a knife could be taken to court, under new guidelines for police and prosecutors.

The change follows a meeting between Gordon Brown, police and legal chiefs, to extend the "presumption of prosecution" in knife cases.

Previous police guidance was to prosecute adults caught with a knife, but to caution those under 18.
Previously, the "presumption of prosecution" had applied only to those aged over 18 who carry a knife without good reason.
Police used their discretion over whether to caution a 16- or 17-year-old by considering aggravating factors, such as whether the person is under the influence of drink or drugs.

Someone confronts you, you can't back down, you can't lose status. And before you know it you're sucked in
Mr Brown said: "We want people to understand, particularly parents, that when children and young people are carrying knives, they are putting other children and young people at risk."
"What we are proposing is that if people are carrying a knife and are prosecuted for other offences, they will be prosecuted for the knife too.
"It has become fashionable [to carry a knife]. What we want people to understand is they put themselves at risk carrying these sorts of weapons."

He said: "But the point at which they now would consider this individual has no previous conviction, there are no aggravating factors, that he or she might be subject to a caution, we are now saying no, that is now removed.

"We are not out to criminalise people who have a good reason for being in possession of a knife, but frankly what good reasons would a youngster have for even carrying a penknife?"

Gordon Brown on knife crime
Police in areas suffering from knife crime will receive £5 million to help fund greater use of searches, courses for young people caught with knives and home visits and letters to parents.

Victims younger
Metropolitan Police figures show that the number of victims of knife crime have been going down.
In the year to March 2008, there were 10,220 such crimes, compared with 12,124 for the previous year - a reduction of 15.7%.
But the number of 11 to 18-year-olds attacked with knives between April and July 2006 rose by 4.5% compared with the same period in 2005.
Last year 27 teenagers in London met violent deaths, compared with 17 in 2006 and 15 in 2005.

Dying teenager called for mother
A teenager called for his mother as he lay dying after being stabbed in a street in south London.

Shakilus Townsend, 16, from Deptford, south-east London, was found with multiple knife wounds in Beulah Crescent, Thornton Heath, on Thursday.
He died in a hospital shortly after midnight.
He is the 18th teenager to be killed in London this year.
The building's residents said the youth called for his "mum" and said "I don't want to die" as they tried to save him.
Police said he was attacked shortly after 1400 BST on Thursday. No suspects have yet been arrested.
People living close to the scene described how they tried desperately to save Shakilus.
Dee Bamina, 35, tried to stem the bleeding from a wound to his chest with a bath towel after another neighbour brought him into the communal doorway of her block of flats.
"I think a group of boys must have been after the boy," she said.
"All I heard was them saying 'get him from the other side'."
Ms Bamina saw a gang of four or five youths, aged 15 to 19, with scarves covering their faces. One had a baseball bat.
Neighbour Richard Higgins, 17, said he saw the weapon that was used.
"It was a big kitchen knife, maybe 18in," he said.
"He had stab wounds on his stomach and one big long wound on his chest."
Tributes for Shakilus appeared on the online memorial site Gone Too Soon.
A contributor Chanel wrote: "Why oh why... it honestly brings tears to my eyes to read stories like this"; a tribute from Fiona said: "Such a waste.. May you rest in peace, xxx".
Shakilus was attacked four days after 16-year-old Ben Kinsella was knifed to death in Islington, north London. Three teenagers were appearing in court on Friday charged with his murder.

Later the same day, the bodies of French students Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez, both 23, were found riddled with knife wounds after a flat fire in New Cross, south east London.

Tunisian national Hamouda Bessaad, 34, was stabbed to death on Old Kent Road, south-east London, on Monday, while Dee Willis, 28, died after a knife attack in Peckham a day later.
Earlier this week Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair and mayor Boris Johnson pledged to continue the struggle to persuade youngsters to stop carrying weapons.

Two brothers who beat, kicked and hit a 17-year-old student to death with a dog chain have been jailed for life.

Larry, 23, and Michael Morrison, 21, both of Victoria Docks, east London, were each ordered by the Old Bailey judge to serve a minimum of 12 years.
A police inquiry began into claims that three jurors were allegedly intimidated while deliberating on the verdict.
The brothers stopped beating Bienda, who had passed out, and left him bleeding when a bus driver stopped them and hooted his horn.
The judge told the pair that although their intention was not to kill the youth they "were older and more mature and should have dealt with it (the row) in a different way".
The 17-year-old student was beaten till he passed out.
"No sentence deals with the loss undoubtedly suffered by family and friends," he added.
The brothers were convicted by a 10-2 majority.
The court heard that three jury members were allegedly approached by members of the public gallery at St Paul's Tube station.
Police have seized CCTV footage from the station and will be talking to the jurors.
A note from the jury read: "They adjusted their pace to come closer to us. We deliberately went to a different escalator to avoid interaction.
"On the way down one of the group made an indirect comment which included the phrase 'hope you can sleep at night'. It was clearly directed at our group."
Another time during the trial the judge said that security had confiscated a knife from a person in the public gallery.

Dauda was arrested five weeks after the murder in east London
A man faces life in prison after being found guilty of murdering an A-level student in east London in a "reckless and violent" act.

Stephen Boachie, 17, suffered a 14cm (5,5ins) stab wound to his heart in an attack outside a pub in Barking, on 1 January 2007, the Old Bailey heard.
Chester Dauda, a 21-year-old Nigerian immigrant from Plaistow, east London, was convicted of his murder.
Dauda will appear in court later this month for sentencing.
Det Insp Tim Wilkinson said: "Dauda's reckless and violent actions resulted in the senseless killing of Stephen Boachie, a 17-year-old boy with his whole life ahead of him."
On the night he was killed, Stephen had just left the Thatched House pub where he had celebrated the New Year, then later hugged a girl who had been in a car with Dauda.
A "scuffle" broke out between Stephen and Dauda before the knife was produced, said Mark Ellison QC, prosecuting.
"Clearly angered by what had happened, the defendant went back to the car, and then returned to Stephen Boachie and stabbed him twice in the upper body."
He died despite the efforts of a doctor to perform open heart surgery in the garage forecourt where he collapsed.
When Dauda was arrested five weeks later, he initially said he had not been at the pub and spent the evening visiting a mosque and then a friend's house.
Later he admitted being outside the pub and said: "The boy in the hood tried to steal from my pockets so I pushed him back and punched him."
Stephen was the first of three teenage murder victims last year who went to Kingsford Community School in Beckton, east London.
The others were 14-year-old Paul Erhahon and Adam Regis, 15.
The killings are not believed to be linked.

Teen arrested over south London stabbing of 14-year-old boyBy Charlotte Gill
Last updated at 7:45 PM on 19th June 2008
A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the stabbing of a 14-year-old boy in south London on Tuesday.
The 14-year-old, who has not been named, is fighting for his life in hospital after he was stabbed in front of drinkers outside a London pub.
The schoolboy was treated by passers-by and remains in a critical condition.
After he was knifed in the chest, he collapsed outside the pub where customers thought he was having an epileptic fit.
But as blood poured from his wounds, they realised the victim, who is of Caribbean origin, had been stabbed.
Three or four black youths were seen fleeing the scene in Southwark, south London, after the attack on Tuesday.
A 16-year-old youth was arrested earlier today and remains in police custody at a south London police station.
The incident is believed to have followed a row among teenagers on an astroturf football pitch in a nearby park.
A Met Police spokesman said: 'It is believed the victim was involved in an altercation with a number of youths.'
Eddie Suleyman, 32, chef at the Roebuck pub who saw the boy collapsed on the ground, said: 'It was horrific - everyone was shocked.
'At one stage there were two girls treating the poor boy. One was beside him crying and the other was trying to stem the blood from his wounds.
'At first we thought it was an epileptic fit because we didn't notice any blood to start with and he just kind of toppled over.
'A girl stopped to try and help him. Then more and more people were running around to help.
'When one girl turned around and was crying, because she realised what had happened, we realised as well.

'About 25 people were around the boy by the time the air ambulance showed up so it was hard to see exactly what was going on and I couldn't see just how much blood there was.
'But when he was lifted into the back of the ambulances you could see there was blood everywhere. It was awful.'
He is the latest victim of a knife crimewave in the capital.
A total of 16 teenagers have been murdered in London in 2008, while 27 teens were killed there in 2007.

'Wrong victim' murder pair guilty

Noor and Sannoh used MAC-10 machine pistol to shoot dead Michael
Two men have been found guilty of murdering a 15-year-old boy who was shot dead as he slept at his home in south-east London.

Michael Dosunmu was shot four times when gunmen burst into the family home in Peckham in February 2007.

The Old Bailey heard that Michael was mistaken for his older brother who was to be killed in revenge for a murder.

Mohammed Sannoh, 19, from Peckham, and Abdi Omar Noor, 22, from Camberwell, south-east London, had denied murder.

They were remanded in custody for sentencing on Wednesday.
Michael was asleep in the bedroom he shared with his brother Hakeem, when Sanoh and Noor burst in and fired a MAC-10 machine pistol.
He was hit by four bullets - one of them piercing his heart and killing him.
Michael Dosunmu's mother on the verdict
Jonathan Laidlaw QC, prosecuting, said: "The intruders turned the light on and opened fire with a MAC-10 at a figure lying wrapped in a duvet.
"That person had no chance of surviving. He had done nothing wrong.
"It was a well-planned and well-executed execution. Over and above the shocking nature of this shooting, the tragedy is that these two defendants killed the wrong person."
The court heard that Michael's older brother Hakeem, 26, had been out at a club where he was trying to sell drugs when his church-going brother was killed.
It was Hakeem Dosunmu's links to a robbery gang and the murder of one of their members, that led the gunmen to the family home, jurors heard
Following the last robbery, three days earlier, one of the robbers, Javarie Crighton, was stabbed to death after confronting organiser Orando Madden about money.
Madden had surrendered to police after the incident and left only Hakeem Dosunmu as the target for revenge, said Mr Laidlaw. There were rumours that Madden had cheated the rest of the gang and that Hakeem Dosunmu had the money, he added. ........

Man In Custody Over Schoolgirl Stabbing
Updated:23:58, Monday June 02, 2008

A man in his 30s is being questioned by police after a 15-year-old girl was found brutally stabbed to death in the lift of a block of flats near London's Waterloo station.

Police at Matheson Lang GardensThe young teenager, who was dressed in her school uniform, had been the victim of an attack so ferocious that the handle of the knife used to kill her had broken off.

She suffered at least 10 stab wounds to her front, neck and back.

Her lifeless body was discovered at Matheson Lang Gardens on Baylis Road in Southwark by a woman who was getting into the lift with her child.

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of the girl's murder.

A police spokesman said: "We are keeping an open mind about motive at this early stage. However, it is not believed to be gang related."

Reporting from the scene, Sky's crime correspondent Martin Brunt said: "This is one of the areas that has recently been targeted by police in an anti-knife campaign.

"The Metropolitan police has upped its presence and brought in knife arches and weapon wands.

"But the last couple of hours suggests their efforts to tackle knife crime have not so far been working."

Girl was stabbed in lift of tower blockThe London Ambulance Service was called at 3:45pm and sent a fast response car, an ambulance and an air ambulance, the first of which arrived in under four minutes.

"Sadly, despite extensive efforts to resuscitate the patient, she was pronounced dead at the scene," a spokesman said.

The victim's next of kin have since been informed.

Neighbour Sharon Moore said: "You think you are fine once you are in the building, this is the last thing you expect... I'm extremely shocked because once I'm in the door and I get in I think I am safe."

She said residents in the flats were given security fobs on Friday as part of measures to tighten up security.

"I feel very insecure and afraid for my children and for the other children in the block," she added.

The girl is the 16th teenager to be killed violently in London so far this year.

Neighbours said they believed the girl was Somalian and a pupil at the Harris Academy in Bermondsey, south-east London.

Most of the young victims of gun and knife crime in the capital have been boys or young men.

Petrified 14-year-old 'ran pleading for help before gang killed him'

The Standard's Beat Knife Crime charter

The case continues.[/img]

Harry Potter actor stabbed to death in mobile phone vendetta
Dominic Tobin and Dipesh Gadher

A teenage actor who is to appear in the new Harry Potter film was stabbed to death in the early hours of yesterday during a fight at a bar.

Robert Knox, 18, was murdered outside the Metro bar in Sidcup, southeast London, as he tried to protect his brother Jamie, 17, from a knifeman.

The attack, which left three other people with serious stab wounds, took place just a few miles from where Jimmy Mizen, a 16-year-old altar boy, was murdered two weeks ago while trying to shield his older brother.

Yesterday it emerged that Knox and Jimmy had played for the same rugby club in Sidcup.

Last night, Robert’s parents, Sally, a buyer for Marks & Spencer, and Colin, who is thought to work in advertising, paid tribute to their son in a statement.

“Rob was kind and thoughtful and would always help out others; he would always spend his last penny on other people instead of himself,” they said.

The life and soul of the party, he was very outgoing, loved sports and would always strike up a conversation with people. He was respectful to others and adored by his family and friends.”

Knox, who overcame bullying as a child to break into acting, had just finished filming a small part for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which is due at cinemas in November. He plays a Ravenclaw student called Marcus Belby.

Knox was a former pupil at Beths grammar school in Bexley, whose alumni include Steve Backley, the former Olympic javelin thrower. He is the 14th teenager to be violently killed in London since the start of the year.

Police said the killing was not gang-related and yesterday, as friends laid flowers at the murder scene, close to Sidcup railway station, Lee Bentley, manager of the Metro bar, said the attack appeared to have been triggered by a row over the alleged theft of a mobile phone.

“Nine days ago, a guy came to the bar and caused trouble,” said Bentley. “He accused [Knox’s friend] Dean Saunders of stealing his phone and hit him in the face. We cleaned up Dean and barred the man.”

But the man, who is black and in his twenties, returned on Friday night armed with two knives and tried entering the bar, where Knox was a regular drinker.

What happened next is unclear, but Jade Nicholson, an assistant bar manager, said: “I saw Rob go outside and shout, ‘You pulled a knife on my brother, someone call the police’.”

Tom Hopkins, 18, who was drinking at the bar, said: “Rob had been trying to stop the trouble, it wasn’t his fault.

“All I remember was seeing Rob get stabbed in the chest. I ran over and me and my mate Tarik both tackled the black man. I jumped on top of him and he said, ‘I’ve got a knife, I’ve got a knife’. As I tried to grab the knife I didn’t realise he had another one in his other hand and he cut me in the back of the head.
“I was wrestling with him in the bushes and there were a lot of other people who were helping me out. It felt like it went on for six or seven minutes until the police arrived and then I walked around the corner from the bar. That’s when I saw Rob — it’s too horrible to describe what I saw. It was just red blood.”

Police said they were called to “a large disturbance” at the bar on Station Road at 12.07am, but Knox’s life was already seeping away. A friend, who asked not be named, said: “I had him in my arms. He said, ‘I just want some help’ and I laid him on the floor. When the paramedics came, they put pads on his chest to try to revive him, but it was obvious it was too late.”

Knox was taken to Queen Elizabeth hospital in Woolwich, southeast London, where he was pronounced dead just before 1am. A post-mortem is due to be carried out today.

Three other people were seriously injured in the attack, including Saunders, 21, who was stabbed in the neck and remains in hospital. Police said his injuries were serious but not life-threatening. Two other friends, aged 16 and 19, also received treatment.
A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Family's tribute to park teenager

Samreen Aslem speaks about her "loving and special" brother Amar
The family of a teenager found dead in a West Yorkshire park have paid tribute to him at the place where he died.
Amar Aslam, who was 17, suffered head injuries in an attack in Crow Nest Park in Dewsbury on Sunday night.
His family said Amar's mother, Reanna, was "heartbroken" and was considering leaving the country.
A 20-year-old man and three boys aged 15, who are charged with Amar's murder, were remanded in custody by magistrates in Dewsbury on Thursday.
They are also charged with robbery and will next appear at Leeds Crown Court on 5 June.

Lives 'meaningless'
Amar's sister Samreen wept as she said her "loving and special" brother had got his driving licence two days earlier.
Samreen, her younger sister Zarieh and their cousin Raja Majid laid a large bouquet of flowers in the walled garden where Amar was found at the weekend.

Reading out a statement to reporters, Samreen described how her brother loved music and cars and was saving his pocket money to buy himself a vehicle.
She said he was "excited and so happy" about getting his licence.
She added: "Amar was a loving and special brother. He was the baby of the family, he was very close to his sisters and his mother.
"He was so caring and sensitive, he would always look after us like a mature older brother."
She said: "Our loving baby brother has gone forever and our lives are painful and meaningless."
Ms Aslam said Amar's nickname was Moon because "he lit up the whole family".
She said: "Our Moon may have gone and without any doubt he will be missed but will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace in heaven."
Mr Majid read out a statement on behalf of Amar's mother.
He said: "My Moon has gone, he has made my life darker forever, he has left me heartbroken."

Dewsbury Teen Murder Victim Named
By Sky News SkyNews -
Monday, May 26 11:38 pmA teenager whose badly beaten body was found in a park in West Yorkshire has been named as 17-year-old Amar Aslam.

Sky News correspondent Mike McCarthy said
two youths aged 15 and a man, 20, all of Asian origin, were being questioned as part of the murder inquiry.
Amar's body was found in a walled garden at Crow Nest Park in Dewsbury and a post mortem has revealed he died of head injuries.
Det Supt Chris Thompson told Sky News he was anxious to "speak to anyone in the park between 2pm and 8pm last night".
McCarthy said police have called the crime "brutal and sustained" but were unclear on motives.
Detectives fear Amar may have been the victim of violence between warring gangs of youths who waged running battles in the park the day before.
It follows the deaths at the weekend of two other people.

On Saturday night, Harry Potter actor Robert Knox was stabbed outside a pub in Sidcup, Kent,

Alan Riddock, 41, died after sustaining knife and head wounds in an attack outside the Park House pub in the Bedminster area of Bristol.

Another man, aged 38, was taken to the Bristol Royal Infirmary with a stab wound and broken jaw. Three people have been arrested.

In another attack, a teenager has been left in a critical condition after being stabbed near East Ham Tube Station in East London shortly before 9:30pm on Sunday night.

Reporting from the scene, Sky News crime correspondent Mark White said "it is believed there were other people involved in the incident".
Two teenagers are also in a critical condition after separate gun attacks in North London in the past two days.

On Saturday, a 17-year-old was found shot in the head in Camden.

A day earlier, another 17-year-old boy was shot in the stomach in Archway, North London.

Drug dealer dies after shooting
Police have stepped up patrols in the area since the killing
A teenage drug dealer has died four days after being shot in the head in north London.

Sharmaarke Hassan, 17, was found with a gunshot wound in Gilbeys Yard, Camden, at about 2300 BST on Saturday.

The teenager from Camden, who had drugs convictions, died in hospital from his injuries on Wednesday night. A post mortem examination will be held later.

The 17-year-old is the 15th teenager to be killed in London since the start of the year.

Police have said they are keeping an open mind about the motive for the killing but believe he was a member of The Money Squad, one of a number of Somali gangs in the area.

He was also found guilty of possessing cannabis and offering to supply the drugs last month, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

The murder is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police's Operation Trident unit, which looks at gun crime in London's Afro-Caribbean communities.
Supt Paul Morris, from Camden Police, said: "This is a shocking tragedy.
"We have stepped up patrols in the borough to reassure the community and specialist officers are investigating the incident."

Crime's growing perception gap
By Chris Summers
BBC News
The government has unveiled a £3m advertising campaign against knife crime, using graphic images of real injuries inflicted amid growing fears about the problem and a spate of recent deaths of young people.
Some 15 teenagers have been killed in London this year alone
"There are three kinds of lies - lies, damned lies and statistics."

Cynics will have Benjamin Disraeli's words in mind when they read the figures presented to the Metropolitan Police Authority's (MPA) annual general meeting (AGM).

According to the statistics, knife crimes fell by 15.5%, from 11,986 to 10,131 between 2006/07 and 2007/08.

Detection rates for knife crime rose from 22.9% to 24.5% and for homicides from 85.8% to 95%.

Yet politics is all about perception and Ken Livingstone was turfed out of the mayor's office recently partly because his opponent, Boris Johnson, tapped into a perception that violent crime was getting worse.

This was further emphasised by an excerpt from the MPA's youth scrutiny process - a survey of young people in London - which found the media were partly to blame by reinforcing negative stereotypes.

The report said: "A balanced portrayal of young people that includes their civic engagement and positive activities in the press is needed to address intergenerational tensions."

A quote from Lewisham Youth Offending Team puts it more succinctly: "If you closed down the Evening Standard tomorrow the fear of crime would plummet."

Sir Ian Blair said 200 weapons had been recovered in the last few weeks
Tackling crime can be a surprisingly bureaucratic task.
It is not all about car chases, dawn raids and high profile court cases.
They are the sharp end of crime fighting.
Behind the scenes, there are hours of exhausting and, at times, mind-bendingly tedious bureaucracy.

The MPA - the watchdog to which Scotland Yard is ultimately accountable - has spawned a series of committees, working parties and focus groups.

Every police operation needs to have its official blessing and, more importantly, its agreement on funding.
For example Operation Blunt 2, the Met's latest anti-knife crime initiative, is estimated to be costing £1m.

Where does that money come from?
In a report, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Rose Fitzpatrick writes: "The corporate tasking budget will be augmented by £1m, specifically for this activity to reduce serious youth violence.

"Should the operational response in future be required to exceed existing budgets any request for additional resources will be subject to the normal decision-making processes."

So there you have it.
But behind all the figures and the red tape are real police officers, real criminals and real victims.

One of those was Peter Woodhams, a 22-year-old satellite engineer, who lived with his girlfriend and three-year-old son on a housing estate in Canning Town, east London.

In January 2006 he was slashed across the face by a gang of youths after confronting them when they threw stones at his car.

The police failed to investigate the assault properly and seven months later Mr Woodhams was shot dead by a teenager, Bradley Tucker, outside his home.

Tucker was one of the suspects for the 2006 assault, whose names had been suggested to the Woodhams family.

After a damning report by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), two officers were required to resign - but they were later reinstated after an internal review by Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur.
Mr Woodhams's father, Peter, appeared at the MPA's AGM on Thursday and urged them to review the decision to reinstate the officers.
For all they say about crime going down and things getting better we do not see a change out on the streets

Peter Woodhams senior
Mr Woodhams told the MPA: "Unfortunately as neither you nor the IPCC will challenge [Assistant Commissioner] Ghaffur's decision we, a bereaved family who not only have to deal with our loss and the catastrophic failings of the Met and in particular these two officers, were then let down again by the Met policing themselves, now we have to bear the responsibility of fighting this."

The commissioner, Sir Ian Blair, apologised to the Woodhams family for the failings of the original investigation, but assured them the Met did not have a culture of "looking after our own" and had instituted new disciplinary procedures, which involved an independent panel.

But outside the meeting Mr Woodhams said Sir Ian and the MPA had only paid "lip service" to their concerns.
He said the police's failure to tackle the anti-social behaviour of the youths who hassled his son was not an "isolated case".

"For all they say about crime going down and things getting better we do not see a change out on the streets," he added.
His comments perfectly captured the growing gap between facts and perception.
