Man, 102, robbed by gang at home
A 102-year-old man has been robbed at his home by three men in what police are calling a "despicable and cowardly crime".
The man answered the door to his house on Ashton Road in Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside, on Tuesday morning.
The gang covered the man's face and ransacked the house before escaping with cash.
The victim has been left very shaken but not physically harmed. Officers are asking witnesses to come forward.
Detective Chief Inspector Chris Sephton said: "This is a despicable and cowardly crime. People who prey on the elderly are unscrupulous and must be stopped."

Stab parents' life sentence call
The parents of a man stabbed to death after confronting three youths outside his Sunderland home have called for "life sentences" to mean life.
Kevin Johnson, 22, of Partick Road, Pennywell, was killed in May.

Three teenagers were later found guilty of murder, sentenced to life, and told they would serve a minimum of 13, 16 and 17 years respectively.

Mr Johnson's parents are collecting signatures for a petition calling for longer life sentences.

Father-of-one Kevin Johnson, was fatally stabbed when he went outside his home after hearing shouting in the early hours of 19 May.
They will be out in 13 to 17 years but it will be with us until we die

John Johnson

Dean Curtis, 19, of Forest Road, Tony Hawkes, 17, of Mortimer Street, and Jordan Towers, 16, of Fell Road, all in Sunderland then ran off shouting triumphantly.
They went on to stab another man, but he survived.

A judge at Newcastle Crown Court sentenced all three to life, with Curtis to serve a minimum of 17 years, Hawks at least 16, and Towers a minimum of 13 years.

Mr Johnson's parents, John and Katie, are campaigning for longer life sentences, and have so far collected 78,000 signatures for a petition they aim to take to Downing Street.

John Johnson said that he would never come to terms with his son's death.

"It's us that have the life sentence, not them. They will be out in 13 to 17 years but it will be with us until we die.

"We want life to mean life - 15 years isn't a deterrent, but if people were looking at 40, 50 or 60 years they might think twice.

"Youths go round in gangs, armed with knives, but if half a dozen of so of them really did get life they might think twice about it and leave that knife in the house."

Shop worker threatened with knife
Police appealed for witnesses to both incidents to contact them
Police have appealed for witnesses after a lone shop assistant in Aberdeen was threatened with a knife by a robber who fled with a small sum of cash. The woman was unhurt but shaken after the attack in a branch of RS McColl in Abbotswell Crescent, Kincorth, early on Thursday afternoon.
The culprit was a man in his 20s, about 5ft 7in tall, with short fair hair.
Meanwhile, a 61-year-year-old woman was injured as a man tried to steal her handbag in Fraserburgh.
Grampian Police said the Aberdeen robber was wearing dark clothing and his face was covered by a scarf.
'Despicable' incident
Although he entered the shop alone, before escaping with a two-figure sum of money, police believe he may have had an accomplice waiting outside.
In the Fraserburgh incident, the pensioner was pulled to the pavement as a man tried to steal her handbag in Manse Street on Thursday afternoon.
The attacker, who ran off in the direction of Hanover Street, was described as being in his late teens, slim, wearing a dark woollen hat, a dark short jacket and either blue or grey trousers.

Youths' golf club attack on man

The court heard the victim had not yet returned to work
Three youths have started custodial sentences for a "cowardly" attack on a passer-by with a golf club.
Kurt O'Brien and Reston du Lindique, 16, admitted grievous bodily harm and were given sentences of four and 40 months for the attack in Merthyr.
Rhys Williams, 15, of Abertillery, was given three years for robbery. The judge at Cardiff Crown Court said the youths had to be "named and shamed".
Their victim, 20, suffered a brain haemorrhage and fractured skull.

Carpenter Liam Davies also lost the use of his left arm and has been unable to work since the attack last August.
But he told the court in a statement that he felt "lucky to be alive".
The teenagers were joyriding in a car in Merthyr but needed money to fill up with petrol, the court was told.
The trio pulled up alongside Mr Davies, who was walking home from a wedding reception.
The public have a right to know who has been brought to justice for inflicting such severe injuries on this young man
They used a golf club to attack him and rob him of his mobile phone and wallet.
Mr Davies was rushed to hospital and treated on the same neurology ward where his girlfriend worked as a nurse.
He needed a metal plate fitted to his head and has been unable to work since the attack last August.

Lifting restrictions on naming the teenagers, Judge Nicholas Cooke said O'Brien and Williams. both from Merthyr Tydfil. and du Lindique should be "named and shamed" because of the severity of their crime.
He said: "The public have a right to know who has been brought to justice for inflicting such severe injuries on this young man."
"This was an exceptionally vicious and cowardly robbery which has had devastating consequences for a young man."
During the hearing prosecutor Hywel Hughes told how the gang used a golf club found in the car during the attack.
"One punched Mr Davies and before he could defend himself while another hit him on the back and in the head with the golf club," he said.

"All three boys ran off having robbed their victim of his wallet and mobile phone.
"A man living nearby heard one of the boys say: 'I think I've killed him'. This man found Liam Davies lying in a pool of blood."

Mr Hughes said Mr Davies had suffered physically.
"He was a fit young man who is now a shadow of his former self. At one stage he was on 20 painkillers a day.
"When he came out of hospital he had to rely on his girlfriend for all his personal functions, even eating, " he said.

"He is unable to work so financially he is struggling on sickness benefit which he finds disturbing as a man who has always worked since leaving school."
In a statement read out in court, Mr Davies said: "I cannot believe what has happened to me.
"They used a golf club on me despite the fact it was three on one - I'm lucky to be alive.
"I can't remember anything about the attack. I just remember waking up in hospital - other people have had to fill in the blanks for me."

Man held over city rape released
The attack happened in the Lanyon Place area
A 20-year-old man arrested after a 14-year-old girl was raped in Belfast city centre has been released on bail. The attack happened in Lanyon Place, near the Waterfront Hall at about 2030 GMT on Saturday, police said.
It is understood that police are following a "definite line of enquiry" in relation to the assault and they have appealed for witnesses.
Belfast Lord Mayor Jim Rodgers said he was shocked by the attack, describing it as a "serious development".
Sinn Fein West Belfast assembly member Jennifer McCann urged anyone with information about the attack to go to the police.
"It is a horrendous crime to happen to anyone but to happen to someone at such a young age is appalling," she said.
"I just hope she gets the support and help she needs now and in the longer term."

A dog has been shot dead in the street in Salford in what police say was a "brutal and prolonged" attack.
A hooded youth was seen holding a gun in the mouth of the golden-coloured Labrador cross in the early hours of Tuesday in the Pendleton area. Greater Manchester Police said the pet had about 30 small pellets lodged in its body and died from its injuries. Its owners have not been traced.
Detectives are urging any witnesses to come forward.
Cytat:
The youth, wearing a dark-coloured hooded top
, was seen on Ascot Walk at about 0300 GMT before walking off towards Haymond Close.
Det Insp Simon Collier, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "This was a needless and brutal attack on a defenceless animal and the nature of the wounds suggest this was a prolonged attack.
"Someone may have had their pet cruelly taken away from them.
"Whoever did this may have come home in the early hours of this morning and I would urge anyone who knows who carried out this shooting to contact us."

Pair critical after petrol attack
Two men are in a critical condition following a petrol bomb attack at their home in County Tyrone.
A 19-year-old man and his father were injured in the incident at Church Hill Cottages in Caledon, which happened just after 2030 GMT on Saturday. Neighbours tried to get them out of the house after it burst into flames.
The police are treating the incident as attempted murder and have said that, as yet, there is no clear motive behind the attack.
Detectives have said their investigation is still in its early stages because they need to hear from the victims and due to their serious injuries that is not possible.
The older man was originally said to be in a stable condition but has now been described as being critically ill.

Probe after crash victim stabbed
A 36-year-old man who appeared to have died as a result of being involved in a car crash was stabbed to death, a post-mortem examination has revealed.
Officers found Steven Bates slumped on the road when they were called to Tennyson Street, Battersea, south-west London, at midnight on Thursday.
Mr Bates of Wandsworth, south London, died at the scene. Tests on Friday found he had been stabbed in the neck.
He also had injuries consistent with a car crash, police said.
Detectives launched a murder inquiry following the post-mortem test results.
No-one has been arrested but police said they were keeping an open mind over the motive.

Det Ch Insp Will O'Reilly said: "Tennyson Street is close to several pubs and at that time of the attack people would have been leaving to make their way home.
"I would ask anyone who has seen the incident or seen a dark coloured 4x4 vehicle in the area to call police."

Norwegian woman had neck injuries
Ms Vik Magnussen moved to London last year to study business
A Norwegian woman found murdered had sustained significant injuries to her neck, post-mortem tests have revealed.
Martine Vik Magnussen's body was found partially hidden under rubble in a basement in Great Portland Street, central London, on Sunday morning.

The 23-year-old was last seen leaving the members-only bar, Maddox club, in nearby Mayfair on Friday morning.
Police said they are looking for a man with whom Ms Vik Magnussen is thought to have left the club.
Police said "her death is thought unnatural with suspected third party involvement".
Further examinations are being conducted on her body to find out the exact cause of death, police said.
Forensic science experts have been searching the block of privately owned flats where the body was found.
Det Ch Insp Jessica Wadsworth said: "This is a tragic waste of a young woman's life.
"She had come to London to study and had her whole future in front of her."
Ms Vik Magnussen moved to London in February last year and began studying business at the Regent's Business School, Regent's Park.
Its head, Professor Aldwyn Cooper, said: "The college is deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with Martine's family and friends at this time."
No arrests have been made and the investigation was at an "early stage", a Metropolitan Police spokesman said.

Ms Vik Magnussen's parents, brother and sister have flown to the UK from Norway.

Pair jailed for killing woman, 82

Maira Roberts had lived in Prestatyn all her life
Two men have been jailed for the manslaughter of an 82-year-old woman who died the day after they burgled her home in Prestatyn, Denbighshire.
John Roberts, 42, and Nathan Williams, 18, both from Dyserth, had already admitted unlawfully killing Maira Roberts last November.

A manslaughter charge against Pepetia Jo Dawson, 22, of Dyserth, was dropped but she was jailed for burglary.

The judge at Mold said the case sent "shudders of fear" through the elderly.

Roberts was sentenced to nine years after admitting manslaughter and one year to run consecutively for handling stolen goods.

He also received a five year sentence for burglaries which will run concurrently.

Williams received six years youth custody for admitting manslaughter and four years for burglaries to run concurrently.

Dawson, who was the getaway driver, admitted two burglaries at the homes of elderly people, including that of Miss Roberts, and possession of cocaine. She was jailed for four years.

The offence was callously executed, you put on your masks and you burst into the house to confront this frail lady

Judge John Rogers QC

Simon Medland, prosecuting, told Mold Crown Court how career thief Roberts and his girlfriend Dawson staked out Miss Roberts' detached home for weeks before the burglary last November.

He described how Roberts and Williams, wearing dark masks, hid in an outbuilding and waited for Miss Roberts to unlock her back door.

They over-powered her, threw her into a chair and, threatening to kill her, forced her to hand over her credit card and pin.

Dawson had parked a car outside the house and had her four-year-old daughter in the back so as to avoid suspicion, the court heard.

Following the burglary, Miss Roberts managed to get to a neighbour's house where she collapsed.

She had suffered a split aorta and died the following day at Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan, the court was told.

Mr Medland said: "Miss Roberts died as a result of the actions of the defendants Roberts and Williams.

'Painful'

"Miss Roberts was 82-years-old, she was six-and-a-half stone and she was small in stature.

"She suffered an upper aortic aneurysm. The pathologist said it would have been excruciatingly painful."

The court had already heard that Miss Roberts had lived at her home all her life.

She never married following the death of her fiancee in a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II.

She was well respected in her local community and treasurer of an artists group, Judge John Rogers QC was told.

Judge Rogers told the defendants he was giving them "deterrent sentences".

He said: "This offence will have sent shivers of fear through all elderly people who live alone."

"Miss Roberts was a fit and active lady looking forward to many happy years ahead until you, Roberts and Williams killed her.

"The offence was callously executed, you put on your masks and you burst into the house to confront this frail lady.

"You knew you would cause her injury, at least physical damage. In the event you caused her death."

Woman assoulted during robbery

An elderly woman has been pushed to the ground by robbers who broke into her Nottinghamshire home.
Three offenders forced a back window open and confronted the woman at the property on Greenfields in Skegby at about 2045 GMT on Thursday.
The men stole a safe containing valuables before driving off in a dark-coloured car.
The woman was shaken but uninjured. Police said the incident was despicable and appealed for witnesses.
Det Sgt Dave Fish, said: "It is such a despicable crime. The offenders are selfish cowards with no consideration for the profound affect this has had on the victim.
"Anyone with information as to the identities of the men should look into their conscience and come forward."
